The Best Time of Year to Pitch Your Holiday Songs...

It’s that time of year again... The holidays are upon us, you're feeling inspired, and next thing you know you’ve written your own Christmas song.

Now what? Well, the next logical step is to get it placed right? If you just wrote it, then the answer is no… This is actually the worst time of year to spend your energy trying to get a 'holiday song' placed.

Shocked by that answer? You’re probably thinking to yourself, “He's crazy! This is the PERFECT time to get it placed… after all, the song is about snow, fireplaces, presents, giving, and everything else that makes this time of year so special. Heck, it even has sleigh bells in it for crying out loud… I NEED TO GET IT PLACED NOW!

The Worst Time Of Year To Try To Get Holiday Placements...

Before we jump the gun and start blasting out e-mails to every music supervisor out there, we need to determine a potential outlet for this song. You should always have an idea of where your song would be a good fit - that's one of the very first rules to successfully licensing your music.

For the sake of this example, let's assume that your ideal outlet would be any of the new Christmas movies that Hallmark is releasing this season.

The Good News:

  •  Hallmark is releasing 40 brand new Christmas movies in 2019….

The Bad News:

  • You missed your opportunity for 2019.

Why? Because they were filmed in early 2019. They entered into post-production by the summer, and were completed by the end of the summer.

The BEST Time To Get Holiday Placements...

So, the BEST TIME to get your holiday inspired songs into the hands of the music supervisors working on these films is in Early Spring!

Let me show you how to research this yourself, so you don’t miss out on all these opportunities next year.

3 Steps To Researching Holiday Films

  1. Simply Google new Hallmark Holiday Movies. You will get a list of the new films that will be airing this season. For this example, I chose “A Merry Christmas Match.”
  2. Search this film on IMDB.com. You’ll see in the image below that this movie was released on October 25th, 2019.
  3. Click “MORE” in the pull-down menu, and Select "Filming & Production."

  • This tells us the Filming Locations and Production Dates. This particular movie was filmed from March 25 to April 12, 2019. We can assume it then went straight into Post-Production.
  • Following this schedule, this production would have been fully completed by the Summer of 2019.

 Looking Forward To Next Year...

There are two distinct points that I want you to take away from this:

  1. IMDB.com is a wealth of information IF you're willing to take the time to do the research.
  2. If the holidays inspire you to write holiday music, then the best time to start pitching those songs is in the spring.

Are there exceptions to this? Of course... there are exceptions to everything. For those of you enrolled in the Master Music Licensing Course, we've talked about holiday placements and you've learned a specific mix technique that instantly increases your opportunities for these types of placements... There will ALWAYS be last minute requests that come up.

However, the over-arching truth is this: The heavy lifting for the holiday season was done long before the leaves even started to fall from the trees.
